Custom Forum Quiz: User Guide

Custom Forum Quiz: User Guide
August 17, 2006 03:47PM
CantoDict now powers a quiz that is intended to test people over a period of days or weeks whilst they browse the forums.
The questions may be either random (within user-defined difficulty parameters) or manually chosen by the user.

It currently runs in two modes, Guest and Full.

Guest Mode
A single level 1 question is shown whilst browsing the forums, which updates periodically (currently every hour). The guest user can answer the question and is told whether they are wrong or right.

Full Mode
(This mode is only available to Premium Subscibers.)
The user has access to a Control Centre, with the following options:
- Enable Custom Quiz : by default set to "yes", but allows people to hide the quiz if they wish.
- Test me on : you can currently choose to be tested on Characters or Compound Words
- Question Pool : the number of questions in the current "pool". Beginners should choose a smaller pool, so they can learn batches of 10 or 25 characters at a time. More advanced users may like to choose larger pools of 100+ characters. (only takes effect when you manually regenerate your question pool, see below)
Difficulty : minimum and maximum levels can be chosen, allowing the quiz to challenge beginners and experts alike! (only takes effect when you manually regenerate your question pool, see below)
- Access to a Report Card

It should also be noted that the quiz will honour your other custom CantoDict settings, such as choosing Cantonese or Mandarin pronunciation.

Report Card (not available to guest users)
The report card is used for:
- monitoring current progress - shows which questions you have answered correctly or incorrectly in your current pool
- reviewing historical progress - shows every question you've ever been asked, along with your success rate
- regenerating your question pool. This can be done randomly (in which case the number of questions will be as chosen above) or custom, in which case it is determined by how many characters you paste into the input box.
- clearing your historical data
You can access all these links at the bottom of your Report Card page.

Please note, you must regenerate your question pool in order for setting changes such as difficulty level to come into effect.

Learning from your mistakes
The quiz has been given some rudimentary artificial intelligence courtesy of an irritable character called Confucius Bot.
This means should you get the odd question wrong, it's likely that you will be retested on it again in future (random test only)
There are other behind-the-scenes rules to help you learn too, like trying not to give you the same questions in a short period of time etc. Please post your thoughts on how the test feels to you so I can try and improve the experience.

Confucius Bot is a stern teacher!

Creating your own quizzes
Some forum users have kindly published their own question pools in this thread. Simply go to the View Report page, click the "Custom Quiz" link at the bottom of the page and paste them into the relevant box.

Generating a quiz signature graphic

You can generate a dynamic graphic like the above showing some of the questions in your quiz. This graphic will appear in your user profile, and you can also use it as a signature file in our forums and external forums. Doing the latter will help promote awareness of the CantoDict project.

To enable the Signature Graphic just go to your Control Centre.

Hey Sheik,

I just donated, was about 10 pound.

I was wondering if you could upgrade my profile, I couldnt enter my details in paypal (probably due to ignorance).

If you could fix that up for me it would be great. *smile*
