半斤八兩 lyrics

I cobbled together, as best I could, various attempts at lyrics for this classic 1976 song. I added the attempted romanisation.

This is one of my favorite songs by 許冠傑. You translation is pretty good, but I think it would sound funnier if you translate it literally.

Tuan, the English translation isn't mine. There is much I don't understand. A literal translation is what I'm hoping for -- and explanation of any idiomatic language where it's not meant to be taken literally.

It would be great if someone could finish it properly.

I suspect there is a lot of idiomatic language that could be explained further.

A literal translation for further improvement by other posters is given below. Hope that helps.

打工仔= working guys, being blue-collar workers or low-ranking junior white collar workers

Working outdoors, moving hurriedly here and there, that’s really no good to your digestive system.
通街= here and there in the streets
走≠runing in this context
in Mandarin, 走路= to walk
腸胃 (i.e. guts and stomach) refers to your digestive system, e.g. 腸胃炎 is gastroenteritis

I would translate the second part (邊有半斤八兩咁理想) as "How can this be as ideal as half a catty for eight taels?" In Cantonese, 邊 (or 邊度) can be used rhetorically to mean "how can this be the case?" (similar to Mandarin 哪裡).

Transcription Accuracy:

- C Chiu, Do you feel strongly that 両 should be used for 'tael' instead of 兩? Or is it more of a preference?

Sorry, 處 is syu3, isn't it. I'm not sure I got what is meant.

翳 is ai3 (not ai1) in Cantodict. Could this word be explained?

做到 (zou6 dou3) is only in Cantodict as the dou3*2 version

I have since found the original video and its subtitles have the first version 夠薑呀楂鎗走去搶 (but without the comma).

- Cantodict only has 認 as jing6 with no change to tone #2. Could someone speak to this tone change?

- Cantodict doesn't have 囉 as lo2. Could someone speak to this tone?

Could someone speak to the tone change in 陣, which is not in CantoDict.

There's a difference between /zou6 dou3/ and /zou6 dou3*2/, even though they both use the same characters.

/dou3/ means "to the extent of", e.g. 我做到癐嗮 = I worked until exhaustion (lit. I work to the extent of being completely tired.).
/dou3*2/ means "able", e.g. 我做到 = I am able to do it.

The way you can distinguish the two uses is by removing 到 from the sentence and see if it still makes grammatical sense. Removing /dou3/ generally makes the sentence incomprehensible because the phrase describing the extent of the action then becomes orphaned. Removing /dou3*2/ generally still makes sense grammatically, though the meaning of the sentence would no longer indicate the ability to do the action.

This applies to 到 in general and not just in the compound 做到.

I've updated the CantoDict entry for 做到 though to indicate the two different meanings. Two of the existing example sentences for 做到 in CantoDict were actually instances of /zou6 dou3/ and not /zou6 dou3*2/.

This should actually be 攞 instead of 囉. The 番 that comes after it should also be 返.

BTW, I also just noticed that the 洗 in 搵嗰些少到月底點夠洗 should be 使.
