As a young pride of lions finds their footing in Chinatown, Alvin Eng serves as their guide.

Eng is a volunteer with the Chinatown Community Young Lions. The nonprofit teaches kids of all backgrounds the art of lion dancing.

"It's good to pass the torch in passing my knowledge over to the younger generation," Eng said.

SAN FRANCISCO - A one-of-a-kind bookstore and gift shop in San Francisco's Chinatown celebrates the Asian American experience.

The Truckee Donner Historical Society then revealed the plaque and club president Greg Zirbel read the text on the plaque.

Dr. Liu and her staff trying to break the cultural stigma. She’s encouraging people to take advantage of the frée services and to not be afraid.

“Every year, we have about 200 patients through our clinic, including their families and parents,” she said. “We reach about 500 people in the community and most of them don’t speak English, so they’re seeking help through our bilingual mental health counselors.”

CHINATOWN — Twenty-one years ago, Karen Chiu said Chinatown’s library was constantly packed. Without many other places to hang out after school, kids all headed to the library: “on the floor doing their homework, waiting for computers,” she said.

Chiu wanted to give them another place to work. While on a break from medical school, she and four others co-founded Project: VISION, which provides tutoring and support to Chinatown-area middle and high school students.

“It was just something that was a passion project initially,” said Chiu, now the group’s executive director. “But because we saw how much need there was in the community, then it became an actual serious project.”
“Impact doesn’t happen overnight,” Chiu said. “But after seeing students go through our program, and just seeing how they grow from 11- and 12-year-olds into adults, it’s just really rewarding.”

Don B. Lee, a Chinatown activist, Asian American community leader and the board chair of Homecrest Community Services (HCS), passed away last Monday, May 6 while on vacation with family in South America. He was 65.

“Community activism was sort of a lifelong thing throughout all of his professional career. It didn’t really start at a particular point. His entire life has been very passionate about making sure that Asian Americans are standing up for themselves and making sure that we as a community are not being silenced or being told that we should be silent, but rather that we have very loud voices that we should use that,” Victoria said. “I couldn’t ask for a better role model in terms of community activism.”

“One of the most important things he taught me was how to be proud of my Asian identity, which I think a lot of Asian American kids struggle with,” Victoria said.
