Cantonese avoid the use of 絲瓜 as in Mandarin because 絲 [si1] sounds like 輸 [syu1] “lose”, which is considered as inauspicious. The very opposite of “lose” is “win”. So 勝, meaning “win”, is chosen to replace 絲.
