almanac; fortune telling calendar 通書 was the original term that means “almanac”. But 書 [syu1] is pronounced exactly like 輸 “lose”, which is considered as inauspicious. The very opposite of “lose” is “win”. So 勝, meaning “win”, is chosen to replace 書.
