通菜
In Cantonese, "water spinch" was originally called 蕹菜. But the written form of 蕹 looks like 擁, which means "jammed" and was considered inauspicious. The opposite of "jammed" is "through", i.e. 通. The vegetable is thus renamed 通菜, which now sounds like "leading to wealth" (通財).
Level: 3 This term is used in both Cantonese and Mandarin/Standard written Chinese. |
