coriander; cilantro; Chinese parsley Mandarin version 芫荽 is the original term. 荽 is pronounced seoi1 in Cantonese, exactly the same as 衰 which means 'decline' and is considered inauspicious. The character 茜 is thus selected to replace 荽 as the two are almost homophonic and have the same tone.
