dwarf planet — a celestial body which orbits round a star (e.g. the Sun in our Solar System), is not a satellite of a planet, but has not "cleared the neighbourhood" around its orbit. The term "pluton" is also used, although strictly, it is a subset of "dwarf planet". Pluto was demoted in August 2006 at the International Astronomical Union 26th General Assembly in Prague, Czech Republic to "dwarf planet" status because of the last criterion (sometimes cuts into Neptune's orbit)
--- As defined by the International Astronomical Union on August 24, 2006 IAU site: [www.iau.org] Wikipedia site: [en.wikipedia.org] Level: 3 This term is used in both Cantonese and Mandarin/Standard written Chinese. |
