a mussel. Mandarin: 淡菜 Cantonese avoid the use of 淡菜 as in Mandarin because 淡 means “slump”, which is considered as inauspicious. The very opposite of “slump” is “boom”. So 旺, meaning “boom”, is chosen to replace 淡.
