In Cantonese, it usually refers to certain accents where the following occurs:

  • Merging the initial /n/ to /l/ (e.g. pronounced as /lei5/)
  • Omission of the initial /ng/ (e.g. as /o5/)
  • Merging the intials /gw/ and /kw/ to /g/ and /k/ respectively when before /o/ (e.g. as /gok3/)
  • Merging the coda /ng/ to /n/ when after the nuclei /aa/, /a/, and /o/. (e.g. as /gon2/)
  • Merging the coda /k/ to /t/. (e.g. as /bat1/)
  • Merging the syllabic nasal /ng/ to /m/. (e.g. as /m4/)
