seek after truth; get to the very bottom of the matter; keep asking until one gets the answers; pursue a question stubbornly [literal] when the clay pot breaks, the cracks go from the top to the bottom [國] 打破砂鍋問到底 This idiom is originally a two-part allegorical saying - 打爛砂盆 being the first part, 璺到篤 being the latter part. However, unlike other allegorical sayings, the latter part of this idiom is always cited together with the first part.
The pun exploits the homophony between 璺 (crack) and 問 (ask) so that 'crack to the bottom' becomes 'ask to the bottom'.  |
