[1] "mud duck", a hybrid duck breed from southern China, the offspring of a male 番鴨 (Fan'ap) and a female 唐鴨 (Tong'ap). Laiap ducks are fairly large white birds with brown beaks with a red edge that are kept without the need for extensive ponds by farmers in Guangdong. [2] Fuidung’on Hakka term in Suriname for local born or mixed Chinese. It is analogous in flavor to the term "mulatto" in English: 番+唐 (i.e., use the analogy for black + white) = 泥 (somewhat like mud, a mixture of the two that is neither black nor white). Level: 4 This term is used in both Cantonese and Mandarin/Standard written Chinese. |
