nucleus - main/principal/central vowel of a sound; [literal] rime-belly A Cantonese sound is usually composed of onset (聲母) + nucleus (韻腹) + coda (韻尾). In layman term, onset is the initial consonant, nucleus is the main vowel, and coda is the ending vowel/consonant.
