This is the first part of a 歇後語 with 心知肚明 as the second part. Literally, 心知肚明 refers to the chicken knowing in its heart that its stomach would be luminated by the insect's flashing light. Figuratively, 心知肚明 is also a standalone idiom that means "knowing what is what. This expression is often used to rebuke a plea of ignorance.
