[1] go mouldy; become mildewed [2] outmoded; outdated; old-fashioned In Cantonese, while "faat3 mui4" is the formal literary pronunciation, 發霉 is more commonly pronounced in colloquial speech as "faat3 mou1" to reflect the original English sound of "mould" from which 霉 is loaned. The variant form 發毛 is also used and pronounced as "faat3 mou1" as 毛 is more easily recognisable than 霉.
