他鄉遇故知
run into an old friend in a foreign place: 他鄉 literally means "other township/countryside", refering to somewhere foreign, not your hometown. 故知literally means "history-knowing", refering to someone who knows your history and story, thus an old friend. Although it's commonly used with just these 5 words, but the entire idiom is 久旱逢甘雨,他鄉遇故知。 The first half is saying "(sweet) rain after a long drought", refering to being happy (of having rain finally, same as meeting an old friend, in a foreign place)
Level: 3 This term is used in both Cantonese and Mandarin/Standard written Chinese. |
