The original term was 冇鳩用 with the taboo sound 鳩 (gau1). A later euphemism has 鳩 modified to 交 (gaau1). The latest euphemism further changes 交 to 叉 (caa1) because the cross mark "X" is usually pronounced as 交叉 in Cantonese. And "X" is preferred to 叉 for easier writing.
