[literal] fire burns a flagpole
[synonym] 火燒棺材

This is the first part of a two-part allegorical saying which has 長炭 as the second part. A flagpole when burnt would be turned into a long stick of charcoal (長炭). As 長炭 is homophonous with 長歎, the twisted meaning has thus become 'life enjoying'. See also [www.cantonese.sheik.co.uk]
