Hong Kong MTR

If you ever visit Hong Kong you will inevitably use the Mass Transit Railway (MTR).  The place names of the various stops are a good example of how difficult it is to romanise Chinese (spell the places so Western people can understand them).  Some of standardised names in Hong Kong are arguably very badly done, although it is interesting to note that the Hong Kong Chinese happily use the westernised version, sometimes even to other residents.

Use the chart below to see if you recognise any characters.  If you have been visiting this site for a while, you should be able to read the literal meaning of Kowloon, and see some literal meanings such as "Blue Field" or "Ox-head corner".

This is a 2003 ticket from the Hong Kong MTR. Click for an enlaged view.
