"This" and "That"

You should read Classifiers before this section.  Once you know some classifiers you only need to learn two characters to be able to say "this object" or "that object".  Please note that this whole page is spoken Cantonese only.

呢個 ni1 go3 this
伊個 ji1 go3 this (alternative)
嗰個 go go3 that
呢枝鉛筆 ni1 zi1 jyun4 bat1 this pencil
嗰個人 go go3 jan4 that person
三本書 saam1 bun2 syu1 three books
嗰三本書 go saam1 bun2 syu1 those three books

Pronunciation Note

呢 is commonly pronounced li1 as well as ni1.  The 伊 ji1 alternative doesn't seem to be as widespread but is still used enough that it is worth knowing of the variation.

Bonus Lesson!
"Here" and "There"

Now you've learned the above, you only need to learn one more character in order to be able to say "here" and "there"

dou6 can refer to a location in Cantonese
呢度 ni1 dou6 here
嗰度 go dou6 there
坐呢度呀! co5 ni1 dou6 aa3 sit here!
