[1] [adj] brilliant; bright; dazzling [2] [粵] [n] [derogatory] bumpkin (see Note) Note: The Cantonese meaning of 'bumpkin' originates from a highly popular TV series (1979) in HK called The Good, The Bad and The Ugly (網中人), which featured a character named 程燦. In the series, this character was a country bumpkin who had just emigrated from China mainland to HK. Since then, the name 燦 stuck with the 'bumpkin' connotation and was first applied to mainland immigrants to HK. Later it was also applied to HK immigrants to the mainland and Canada.
