suffer a double loss; (usually said of money) becoming less [lit] to dip pig intestine in boiling water 滾水淥豬腸 is the first part of a 歇後語 with 兩頭縮 as the second part. Literally, when pig intestine is dipped in boiling water, the former will shrink at both ends. Figuratively, this Cantonese meaning of “having both ends shrunk” is just the opposite of the English idiom “making both ends meet”.
