tongue [粵] 舌 [sit6] was the original word that means “tongue”. But 舌 is pronounced exactly like 蝕 “suffering loss”, which is considered as inauspicious. The very opposite of “suffering loss” is “earning profit”, which is 利 in Chinese. So the word 脷, pronounced exactly as 利, is coined to replace 舌.
